Today, possession of marijuana in North Carolina can lead to serious criminal charges, even for a relatively small amount. But what about tomorrow? Could this change at some point in the future? This simple question is tearing the Tar Heel State in two different directions. Hardliners are actively cracking down on the few legal loopholes left, from legal hemp products to nearby dispensaries in Cherokee land and Virginia. Meanwhile, others are debating the potential benefits of finally legalizing cannabis in North Carolina. Which side will win?
Lawmakers in North Carolina Consider the Potential Economic Advantages of Legalization
While North Carolina is still taking very slow steps toward legalization, debate continues among lawmakers. Legalization advocates can feel encouraged that state politicians are at least talking about the possibility of legalizing cannabis. According to WCNC, the latest round of debates has been sparked by something almost everyone can understand: Money.
It’s easy to see the potential economic advantages in the modern era, as North Carolina lawmakers only need to look at how much tax revenue their neighbors are generating from weed sales. Most US states have legalized cannabis in some form or another, and some among North Carolina’s leaders are beginning to feel as though they are missing out.
State-sponsored marijuana sales couldn’t come at a better time. The state is facing considerable funding issues and stubborn inflation rates. A new source of tax revenue could help alleviate these concerns, thereby making life better for all residents. To put things in perspective, other states are currently raking in billions of dollars in tax revenue from cannabis sales alone. In 2025 alone, these states generated $4 billion. This number will inevitably continue to grow.
While some argue that cannabis legalization would harm the youngest and most vulnerable population, there is always another side to the proverbial silver tax dollar. States like Colorado have diverted hundreds of millions of dollars in marijuana tax revenue toward the construction and support of schools.
One might argue that while new schools are nice, they are outweighed by easier access to weed for teens. But what about alcohol? Drunk driving among teens and alcohol poisoning are arguably more dangerous to teenagers than cannabis can ever be, and this “drug” has been legal in the state for countless decades. Just like alcohol, only adults would be allowed to purchase marijuana in North Carolina under the new proposed laws.
