South Carolina authorities have continued their operations against alleged drug traffickers, indicting over 100 people in May of 2025 alone. These developments are connected with various law enforcement operations, including an investigation codenamed “Devil in Disguise.” What can you do if you were swept up into a drug investigation like this one? Can a South Carolina cocaine defense attorney help you avoid negative outcomes?

South Carolina Authorities Announce Over 100 Indictments

The first major recent development came in mid-May, when authorities in South Carolina announced indictments against over 100 people. This announcement came after a major drug trafficking bust associated with Operation Devil in Disguise. The investigation focused on the trafficking of numerous narcotics, including cocaine and fentanyl.

In connection with the bust, authorities seized over 44 kilograms of cocaine. They also recovered $1 million in cash and several firearms. Law enforcement states that most of these drugs originate from shipments from Mexico, organized by cartel groups. Numerous arrests have already been made. However, the sheer number of indictments suggests a wide-sweeping operation that might have captured innocent people. Many of the defendants may eventually avoid criminal charges or convictions.

Man Caught With 11 Pounds of Cocaine in Winston-Salem

One day later, sources reported that a man in Winston-Salem had been caught with 11 pounds of cocaine. The individual was arrested after police executed a search warrant, and authorities had been investigating him for a long time beforehand.

He was found with 11 pounds of cocaine, $25,000 in cash, two firearms, and two expensive vehicles. As a result, he was charged with felony trafficking, felony possession, possession with intent to sell, and other crimes.

Federal Grand Jury Indicts 16 Alleged Gang Leaders in South Carolina

Two days after that, sources reported that a federal grand jury had indicted 16 alleged “gang leaders” for their role in cocaine trafficking operations. The investigation into this operation was led by the Lowcountry Crime Task Force, and it resulted in the seizure of 60 kilograms of cocaine. In addition, law enforcement recovered 12 firearms.

All of these individuals are said to be leaders or associates of well-known gangs in the area. However, it is important to remember that an indictment is only the first stage of a criminal trial. These individuals should be presumed innocent until proven guilty. Some of these arrests could be the result of mistaken identity or other investigative errors, and many might eventually walk free.
