North Carolina Could Start Installing Speed-Limiting Devices in Vehicles

Today, you have the right to press down on the accelerator and reach whatever top speed your vehicle is capable of. Sure, you might get a speeding ticket in North Carolina, but that is your responsibility. A new law could take this right away from you in the Tar Heel State. If a new bill passes, the state may have the right to install a “speed-limiter” on your vehicle that prevents you from reaching a certain velocity. 

Lawmakers Want to Use AI and Satellites to Slow You Down

According to a May 2026 report by WRAL News, lawmakers plan to use artificial intelligence (AI) and global positioning system (GPS) technology to slow down certain vehicles in the Tar Heel State. Although this might sound like science fiction, the “Stop Super Speeders” bill could soon make it a reality. While privacy advocates are opposed to this intrusion by the government, families who have lost loved ones to speeders say it’s a great idea. 

One might compare such technology to an ignition-interlock device. Those who rack up too many DUI convictions must install these devices in their vehicles, and the same logic would apply to super speeders. Accumulate too many speeding tickets within a certain amount of time, and the government could force you to install a speed-limiting device. 

Supporters of this bill also point out that simply revoking a person’s license doesn’t always work. An individual could always choose to drive on a revoked license, and some have been caught doing this scores of times. Some of these repeat violators subsequently kill victims while speeding, and some say that speed limiters could save lives. Another potential benefit is the fact that a speed limiter could prevent people from fleeing the scene of crashes, making them easier to apprehend for pursuing law enforcement. 

On the other hand, it is easy to see how big government could abuse technology like this. What happens if the government decides that people who vote a certain way shouldn’t be able to reach certain speeds? What if a corrupt government official manages to “hack in” to your vehicle, causing it to slow down on the highway before you’re rear-ended by a semi-truck? 

This development is not unique to North Carolina, and 16 other states are considering making a similar change. If this bill passes into law, it would become effective on December 1st, 2027.
