When facing assault charges in North Carolina, the most obvious goal is to have those charges dropped by prosecutors. Although acquittal is also a positive outcome, dropped charges are arguably preferable. This is because when prosecutors choose to drop your charges, you do not have to go through a trial. This is what one woman recently experienced in North Carolina after being accused of assaulting a federal officer.
Video Evidence “Contradicted” Official Story
In November of 2025, WCNC Charlotte reported that federal prosecutors had agreed to drop assault charges against a woman in North Carolina. According to the report, the woman’s attorney presented video evidence that contradicted the “official story.” The government filed a motion to dismiss the criminal complaint of assaulting a federal officer, and the presiding judge granted the request.
The charges stemmed from an incident earlier in November at the Department of Homeland Security Office in Charlotte. The defendant was evidently participating in some kind of protest against federal immigration enforcement, and she was with a group of others who were attempting to interfere with federal officers.
Authorities alleged that at some point, the woman jumped on an officer’s back and tried to prevent them from arresting another person. However, video footage of the incident seemed to tell a different story. The woman’s attorney argued that the Department of Justice rushed to post a press release detailing these allegations without checking to see whether they were actually true.
It seems as though the defendant was physically incapable of her alleged conduct due to health issues. Video footage showed the arrest, but at no point did the woman even touch federal officers before being tackled to the ground. To make matters worse, the authorities prevented the woman from accessing the medication she needed for her chronic health conditions.
While the prosecutors did not provide a specific reason for dropping the charges, one has to assume that the video evidence was exactly as the attorney described it.
How Can I Have My Charges Dropped?
It may not be possible to convince prosecutors to drop your charges in the same way. Sometimes, prosecutors are confident enough to move forward with a trial, even if you cast doubt upon their evidence beforehand. Each case is different, and it makes sense to create a personalized defense strategy based on your specific circumstances. That being said, an experienced defense attorney may be able to use various evidence (including video footage) as they push to have your charges dropped.
